Salem: The Karnataka government was persuading Palanichamy, brother of Tamil activist Kolathur Mani, to go to jungles as an emissary to negotiate with forest brigand Veerappan the release of Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader H Nagappa from the brigand's captivity, Palanichamy's family sources said.

Karnataka government had on September 14 ruled out sending Kolathur Mani, now in a Karnataka state jail, as an emissary.

Palanichamy's family sources told reporters at Uthiramparuthikadu, Palanichamy's village near Salem, on September 15 that Palanichamy met his brother in the jail on September 14 when the Karnataka government officials conveyed the government's wish to Palanichamy.

Nagappa, former Karnataka minister, was kidnapped by Veerappan on August 25.
