Infiltration bid foiled, 9 terrorists killed in J&K

Jammu: Barely hours before the commencement of polling, Indian troops foiled an infiltration bid by terrorists in Kupwara sector killing nine foreign mercenaries even as Pakistani troops resorted to shelling and firing in several areas of Jammu and Kashmir besides Siachen glacier sectors overnight, a Defence spokesman said.

Heavily armed nine terrorists were killed in Sari ridge area of Tangdar in Kupwara on September 15 night when they were infiltrating apparently to disrupt the polls, Northern Command Army spokesman Lt Col SPK Singh said.

He said seven AK-47 rifles, twelve magazines, 1150 rounds of ammunition, two pistols, five kg of explosive, 80 rifle grenades, 30 anti-personnel mines, 70 remote controlled detonators, two radio sets and Rs 1 lakh in Indian currency were recovered from them.

Pak troops also resorted to small arms and artillery firing in Batalik, Yaldor and Mushkoh areas of Kargil sector, Kundarali and Gulmarg in Baramullah sector, Mendhar in Poonch, Nowshera in Rajouri and R S Pura in Jammu sector.
