New Delhi: An estimated 44 per cent of 14.89 lakh voters exercised their franchise
on September 16 in the first phase of polling in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly
elections, the Election Commission said.
Briefing reporters at the end of the polling, Deputy Election Commissioner Sayan
Chatterjee said that Kargil district registered a highest 67 per cent voting
followed by Poonch at 48 per cent, Rajouri 47 per cent, Kupwara 40 per cent and
Baramulla 37 per cent.
In Sopore in Baramulla, only three to five per cent electorate exercised their
franchise, he said.
"We are satisfied," Chatterjee said when asked whether the Commission was happy with
the poll turnout in the first phase of polling.
Chatterjee said that the Commission has decided to conduct re-polling in two polling
stations, one each in Pattan and Mendhar Assembly constituencies.
While the electronic voting machines (EVM) failed in a polling station in Pattan,
some miscreants tried booth-capturing in a polling station in Mendhar in which EVM
was damaged.
