Arunachal Pradesh bandh passes off peacefully
Wednesday, September 18 2002 20:34 Hrs (IST)

Itanagar: Barring a few stray incidents, the day-long bandh by All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) passed off peacefully in the state on September 18 as police made preventive arrests of over 200 of the union members, including its president and other office bearers were arrested, official sources said.

Normal life was affected in the capital complex with all markets closed and private vehicles keeping off the roads during the bandh, which began at 05:00 hours (IST), the sources said.

Educational institutions, banks, post offices and other Central government offices too did not function, it said.

However, state government offices functioned as usual and state buses plied with police escorts.

Reports reaching here from the districts said the impact of the bandh was partial.

At Sepa, headquarters of East Kameng district two students received bullet injuries when police resorted to firing to disperse a mob of students. In retaliation, the mob ransacked damaged some government vehicles and ransacked the houses of some politicians.

Police also burst one round of teargas at Leki village near here to disperse a group of students who pelted stones on government vehicles.

AAPSU called the bandh in support of its 12-point charter of demands including immediate withdrawal of Arunachal Pradesh Control of Organised Crime Act-2002.
