Curfew continues in Borsad, situation under control
Wednesday, September 18 2002 10:48 Hrs (IST)

Worrying times for CM Modi over renewed communal violence Ahmedabad: An indefinite curfew, imposed in Borsad town of Anand district on September 17 following arson and police firing, that claimed one life, continued for the second day on September 18 even as the situation in the town remained tense but under control.

Police said no untoward incident was reported since September 17 night.

A clash broke out between members of two communities over an issue of riding motorcycle on September 16. Police had to open fire after the mob hurled crude bombs, prompting authorities to impose indefinite curfew.

However, in fresh outbreak of violence on September 17, some shops were set ablaze by the frenzied mobs in the town, forcing police to burst 31 rounds of teargas shells and fire 22 rounds, that claimed one life and left three others injured, police said.

Twenty-six policemen and fire brigade personnel were also injured in the heavy stone pelting.
