New Delhi: In a significant statement, the UN Military Observer Group in India and
Pakistan (UNMOGIP) on September 18 called for cessation of violence and tensions in
Jammu and Kashmir and asked all parties involved in the Kashmir issue to encourage a
''ceasefire'' among them.
In a statement on the occasion of International Day of Peace on September 21, UNMOGIP
said, ''This day marks a unique opportunity for the cessation of violence and
tensions throughout the world, but particularly in J&K, creating the possibility to
participate in a global ceasefire and day of non-violence.''
It said in commemoration of this day ''all the parties involved in the Kashmir issue
should encourage a ceasefire among the parties involved in the crisis to foster the
practice of tolerance and living together in peace.''
It recalled that in 1971, the UN Security Council had demanded that a durable
ceasefire and cessation of all hostilities in all areas of conflict be strictly
observed and remain in effect until withdrawals take place, as soon as possible, of
all armed forces to their respective territories and to positions which fully respect
the ceasefire line in J&K supervised by the UNMOGIP.
The group consists of 45 observers from nine countries who monitor the cease-fire in
JK for the UN.
