CBI confirms Abu Salem's arrest in Portugal

New Delhi: One of India's most wanted criminals, underworld don Abu Salem, has been arrested along with his companion Monica Bedi by the Interpol in Portugal nine years after he fled to Karachi in the wake of the Mumbai blasts in 1993.

Wanted in several cases of murder, extortion and kidnapping, including the killing of audio king Gulshan Kumar, Salem was picked up in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon along with B grade Bollywood actress and his girlfriend Bedi on a charge of travelling on fake documents.

Confirming the September 18 arrest, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director P C Sharma told reporters that government was in touch with authorities in Portugal and was considering sending a CBI team there on September 21.

India does not have an extradition treaty with Portugal.
