Ahmedabad: Indefinite curfew imposed in Borsad town of Anand district on September
17 following group clashes and police firing, that claimed one life, continued for
the fourth day on September 20 as tension prevailed in the town on the day of the
Ganesha immersion.
The curfew was relaxed for women and children on September 19 for three hours and
the period passed off peacefully and no untoward incident was reported in the last
two days, police said.
The town had witnessed on September 16 a clash between members of two communities
over an issue of riding motorcycle and police had to open fire after the mob hurled
crude bombs.
Authorities imposed indefinite curfew in the town on September 17
morning.
However, in fresh bout of violence on September 17, some shops were set ablaze by
the frenzied mobs in the town, forcing police to lob 31 teargas shells and fire 22
rounds, in which one person was killed and three others sustained
injuries.
Twenty-six policemen and fire brigade personnel were also injured in the heavy stone-
pelting.
