Sonia pulled up for remarks on J&K trifurcation
Friday, September 20 2002 20:31 Hrs (IST)

Raipur: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Sushma Swaraj on September 20 said that the trifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir is not a separatist or un- Constitutional demand.

She described as "baseless" Congress president Sonia Gandhi's remark that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) were toeing the Pakistani line by supporting division of the state.

"Although I have not supported the division of Jammu and Kashmir into three states, but it is not an un-Constitutional or separatist demand," Swaraj told reporters.

"And the people were favouring such a demand because of neglect to their regions," she said and denied that the Jammu State Morcha was a platform of Hindus and on that basis they were seeking votes.

Similar morchas are there in Ladakh and they are not communal and Gandhi's reported allegation that those supporting the separatists had no basis, the BJP leader said.

The first phase of the polls proved that it was not only free and fair but also participatory, the minister said, adding that the US has also stated this.
