London: A majestic Gurudwara, claimed to be the largest and first of its kind in
Europe, with provision to accommodate 4,000 devotees at a time, is getting finishing
touches at the Sikh-dominated Southall, West London.
Built at a cost of over 17 million Pounds, the marble-floored Gurudwara has a
covered area of one lakh square feet, Himmat Singh Sohi, president of the Gurudwara
Management Committee, Singh Sabha, told reporters on September 21 evening.
Richard Adams, the Architect of the Gurudwara visited the Golden temple in Amritsar
and several other Gurudwaras in India to incorporate the best designs and panelling
in the Southall Gurudwara so that the new Sikh shrine would be a unique in its
design and architecture.
The entire funds for the project for the Gurudwara was raised through donations.
Manjit Singh Lit, a leading trader in Southall donated 32,000 Pounds for the project
to see that it is completed on time.
Work on the project was on for the last two and half years, Sohi said.
