New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is awaiting green signal from
the Portuguese authorities to send its team to negotiate underworld don Abu Salem's
extradition or deportation but the agency categorically said his companion and
Bollywood starlet Monica Bedi was not wanted by it.
"We are ready. The ball is in the court of the Portuguese authorities now. Results
will be available when they make some movement and take a decision either to
extradite him or to deport him," CBI joint director and spokesman Ashwani Kumar said
when asked about the delay in sending the team.
He said the Home and External Affairs Ministries were in touch with the Portuguese
authorities to get the key accused in the Mumbai bomb blast case deported to India.
"It takes time. We have to wait and be patient. Our team cannot land there without
obtaining the green signal from the Portuguese government, the Lisbon police and the
Indian Embassy there," Kumar said.
The constitution of the first team, which would negotiate the modalities with the
Portuguese authorities was currently "under discussion" and it is likely to include
officials from CBI, ministries concerned and the Mumbai police, he said.
Meanwhile, reports from Lisbon said Indian authorities there were preparing legal
arguments to persuade Portugal to deport Salem.
The CBI joint director said while there were police cases against Monica Bedi in
Hyderabad and Bhopal for giving fake identity for obtaining passports, "she is not
wanted by us".
