Hyderabad: An NRI delegation from United States, which is on a "sadbhavana mission",
on September 24 said the people of strife-torn Gujarat were still in a state of shock
and there was lot to be done to infuse confidence among victims of communal
violence.
Sharing their experiences after visiting the riot-hit areas of Gujarat, the
delegation members, from various walks of life and some representing NGOs, said
victims were still languishing in 'unofficial camps' with an uncertain
future.
People belonging to both the communities were in the grip of fear and rehabilitation
measures were far from satisfactory, the delegation members told reporters in
Hyderabad.
The delegation comprised Raju Rajogopal, an alumnus of IIT, Chennai, and now heading
an umbrella organisation 'Coalition Against Communalism' in US, Satinath Choudhary,
an IIT engineer from Kharagpur and a researcher, Namja Sultana, a social worker and P
D John representing Federation of Indian American Christian Organisations,
Washington.
The NRIs are here to mobilise public opinion against violence.
"We have met number of prominent persons involved in rehabilitation and peace works.
We found many victims still in unofficial relief camps," they said.
They said as Indians they felt ashamed of the violence targeted at
minorities.
Answering a query, John said his Washington-based organisation was raising funds for
the Gujarat victims and they would be routed through a few selected NGOs engaged in
providing rehabilitation to the victims.
