Srinagar: In a swift operation, three policemen, including two officers, taken hostage by suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants in uptown Srinagar were rescued by security forces in the wee hours of September 24, director general of police A K Suri said.

Suri said that security personnel adopted a diversionary tactic with one batch of policemen engaging the militants from one side of the house in Gogji Bagh locality while another forced its entry from the other end.

"We got the layout of the house and then launched the rescue operation," he said.

Suri said that security personnel planted explosives in the house and detonated it after repeated warnings to the militants to surrender failed.

He said that the three rescued policemen were safe but the house is on fire.

Meanwhile, a polling station near the site of the encounter was shifted to Amar Singh College to ensure smooth conduct of polls.
