Bangalore: The Cauvery River Monitoring Committee team, headed by Union Water
Resources Ministry Secretary A K Goswami, on September 25 wrapped up its two-day
visit of Karnataka but cancelled its "fact-finding mission" to Mettur in the wake of
protests by Tamil Nadu.
The Committee, which is visiting the state on the directive of Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee, wound up its exercise with an on-the-spot inspection of Kabini
reservoir in Mysore and Hemavathy in Hassan district on September 25, official
sources said.
The team also undertook field visits and met farmers in Kabini and Hemavathy
reservoir area. On September 24, it visited Krishnaraja Sagar in Mandya and also
paid a visit to fields and heard farmers' views on the prevailing
situation.
On arrival in the city on September 24, the Committee held preliminary discussions
with the chief secretaries of Karnataka, Kerala and Pondicherry in the absence of
Tamil Nadu representative, who had boycotted the meet taking a stand that any
decision to be taken by the official body would be tantamount to contempt of
court.
On return to the city, the Committee members met Karnataka chief secretary Dr A
Ravindra and officials of the irrigation department.
