Kuala Lumpur: A proposed extradition treaty with Malaysia and strengthening of
relations with ASEAN countries would figure prominently in the talks visiting
External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha has with Malaysian leaders during his two
day official stay.
Shortly after his arrival in Kuala Lumpur, Sinha said on September 26 that New Delhi
and ASEAN have worked together in several areas including search and rescue,
countering sea piracy.
"We can do the same in many other areas, notably terrorism, small arms proliferation
and their links with drug-trafficking," said Sinha.
The external affairs minister said that he would also be doing the ground work for
the first ever ASEAN-India Summit in Cambodia in November.
During the discussion on bilateral issues with Malaysian leaders, the issue of
having an extradition treaty and a labour treaty would also be taken up, he said.
India is keen to have an extradition pact with Malaysia that would help it bring
Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi, an accused in the Bofors case, to stand
trial.
India, he said, fully respected the status of the Nuclear Free Zone in South East
Asia and was ready to convert this commitment into a legal obligation.
