Srinagar: Militants on September 27 made an abortive attempt on the life of a
National Conference (NC) candidate and targeted a designated polling station in
separate attacks in the Kashmir Valley, where a self-styled district commander of
Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) was killed along with his two bodyguards, a police spokesman
said.
Ultras lobbed a grenade and followed it by firing on a NC rally led by its candidate
from Bijbehara constituency, A G Veeri at Kanalwan in Anantnag district around 14:00
hours (IST) on September 27, the spokesman said.
He said that security personnel accompanying the rally fired in retaliation foiling
militants' plan. None was hurt in the shootout and the NC leader was immediately
taken away to safety.
Four policemen were injured when militants opened fire on a designated polling
station manned by state police at Qoimuh village in Kulgam area of Anantnag, the
spokesman said.
In a successful anti-militant operation, the spokesman said that security forces
killed three militants, including a self-styled district commander of JeM outfit at
Cherwani village of Gulgam in border district of Kupwara on September 27.
A security search party killed district commander Shoukat Ahmad War and his two
bodyguards after a fierce gunfight, the spokesman said, adding that the operation in
the area was still continuing.
