New Delhi: Pakistan's demand for a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir will be negated
if the state Assembly elections are completed in a free, fair and participatory
manner, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani said on September 29.
Islamabad's prime objective "is that the Jammu and Kashmir elections are not allowed
to be held in a smooth manner because it negates their demand for plebiscite,"
Advani said inaugurating the annual conference of Directors General and Inspectors
General of Police.
"The kind of concern being shown by the Western nations proves the importance they
are giving to these elections. If the Jammu and Kashmir polls are conducted in a
free and fair manner, then there won't be any meaning left for holding of a
plebiscite," he said.
Referring to reports that terrorist outfits had announced rewards of Rs 10 lakh for
killing of a candidate and the militants were going around threatening those who had
voted by identifying them from the indelible ink mark, Advani said, "My intention
or that of other parties is not to win these elections, but conduct of the polls in
a participatory, free and fair manner."
