New Delhi: Asking security agencies to pull up their socks, Deputy Prime Minister L
K Advani on September 29 said that the Intelligence and security agencies should
strive to provide specific Intelligence inputs so as to enable quick pre-emptive
action.
"Our Intelligence is reasonably good and we get good general inputs. But till
specifics are not known, it becomes difficult to take action on them," Advani told a
conference of top Intelligence and police officers.
Referring to the transfer of 45 NSG commandos to Gandhinagar following the terrorist
attack at the Swaminarayan Temple, he said that there was "a delay of about 45
minutes" because of a traffic jam in Delhi, which delayed them from reaching the
airport.
"There should be some ways to deal with such situations. May be this time nothing
much happened. But there may be a time when such delays will make a difference,"
Advani warned.
Describing the task of police, paramilitary forces and the commandos during the
temple attack as "very difficult", he said that they were not only to safely
evacuate the devotees, but also to protect the monument as also catch or eliminate
the perpetrators of the crime.
He said that the fact that the terrorists were carrying loads of dry-fruits and
dates showed they were in for a long haul and must have had plans to take hostages,
like in case of the December 13 attack on Parliament.
