Chennai: The condition of Union Industries Minister Murasoli Maran appeared to have
deteriorated as the specialists from Hyderabad put him under liver and kidney
dialysis at the corporate Apollo Hospital, where he was admitted on September 21
with high fever.
Though dialysis for kidney has become a common practice in the country, only a few
undergo liver dialysis, medical experts say.
Dr Dharmesh Kapoor, a liver specialist at Hyderabad's Global Hospitals, performed
the liver dialysis with the help of a liver assist device, known as MARS, which was
brought from Hyderabad.
MARS, Molecular Adsorbent Re-circulating System is an albumin dialysis system for
removing toxins that accumulate due to liver failure. MARS in some cases enables the
liver to regenerate itself and regain its lost functions.
A medical bulletin issued by the Apollo hospital on September 29 afternoon said
Maran was still in the critical care unit.
A team of liver and kidney specialists, under the guidance of Dr Kapoor, Dr K R
Palanisamy and Dr Shivakumar Chitturi was treating him as the fungal endocarditic
had resulted in multi-organ involvement including liver and kidney. The medical
team was trying to maintain all his parameters.
Maran underwent mitral valve replacement in a high risk surgery at the hospital for
replacement of the fungus infected valve. But the fungus had entered his blood
stream, creating a fresh bout of problems.
