Srinagar: National Conference (NC) president and Union Minister Omar Abdullah on
September 30 announced that his party will pull out from the National Democratic
Alliance (NDA) government after the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and
ruled out any alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and People's
Democratic Party (PDP) in the post-poll scenario.
"I will resign from the Union Ministry irrespective of whether my party comes to
power or sits in the Opposition," Abdullah told reporters.
Abdullah, however, left the option open on the question of NC being part of the NDA
after the elections saying that it would depend upon the progress on the autonomy
talks with the Centre's interlocutor Arun Jaitley.
Asserting he would choose the time for his resignation, Abdullah categorically ruled
out sending any replacement for him in the Union government. "I do not think we will
have any representative in the Vajpayee ministry," Abdullah said.
He said that he was optimistic that his party would safely cross the halfway mark of
44 seats. However, in the event of the party failing to attain a majority, the NC
will not have any truck with BJP, Congress or PDP. "I would rather sit in the
Opposition than enter into an unholy alliance with parties like BJP, PDP and
Congres," Abdullah said.
He said if the NC stakes claim to form the government in the event of a hung
Assembly, it will be with other parties.
