M'shtra govt takes serious note of Salman issue
Monday, September 30 2002 13:22 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Chhagan Bhujbal, on September 30 said that he has convened a high-level meeting of police officials, including city police commissioner M N Singh, to examine the case of rash driving by actor Salman Khan.

On September 28 morning, Salman rammed into a bakery at Bandra in North West Mumbai, killing one person and injuring four others. The actor, who was booked under Section 304 (a) of Indian penal code (IPC) was released on bail by the police after furnishing a bond of Rs 950 and a surety.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the "World Free Trade Zone Expo 2002" on September 30 morning, Bhujbal said, "It was not a case of simple accident, where a person was mowed down while crossing the road but rather a clear case of sheer negligence on part of Salman."

He also expressed surprise over the fact that the actor, who had surrendered at 11:00 hours (IST), was released on bail just after a few hours. "However, this perhaps would not have been possible in case of a common man," he added.

There was a need to look at the law in this regard, he said hinting at a probable modification of the same.

Bhujbal, who also holds the Home portfolio, further claimed that even Singh was not informed about the rapid developments in the case.

To a query as to how the police had granted bail to the actor, he said that in case of such offences, bail could either be obtained from the court or the police themselves could grant the bail.
