New York: A special retrospective of actress and social activist Shabana Azmi's
movies is being held in New York in recognition of her talent and dedication to art
cinema, causes of the poor and women.
About 13 of her movies will be screened in as many days as part of the prestigious
New York Film Festival, organisers said.
The retrospective began with Shyam Benegal's 'Ankur', which brought Shabana into
limelight and helped her establish in the industry.
Other movies being shown
include 'Godmother', 'Mire', 'Mrityudand', 'Khandhar', 'Kamla', 'Sati', 'In
Custody', 'Mandi', 'Immaculate Conception', 'Anjuman' and 'Paar'.
Shabana has appeared in over 60 movies and made considerable number of stage
appearances in her 30-year career and has also found time to champion the causes of
the disadvantaged, slum dwellers, minorities and women.
Her political work is seen as extension of her acting, where she has often portrayed
