Jammu: In less than 24 hours of gunning down four Hizb-e-Islami militants, Army foiled another major infiltration bid along the line of control (LoC) in Rajouri- Poonch sector, killing eight ultras in a pre-dawn operation, official sources said on October 3.

Troops, who were on ambush points when they observed a group of heavily-armed militants crossing the border into Indian territory at Lanjyote forward post in Balakot sector at around 05:00 hours (IST), the sources said.


After laying a cordon in the belt, troops challenged the militants to surrender. However, the militants resorted to grenade attacks followed by firing on troops, who retaliated resulting in a firece gunbattle that was still on, they said.

In the gunbattle, eight militants were killed and an Army officer lost his life and two jawans were injured, they said, adding that the operation was still on.

Army had foiled an infiltration bid on October 2 in Mandi area of Poonch district, gunning down four Hizb-e-Islami (HeI) militants.
