US not serious in combating terrorism: BJP
Thursday, October 3 2002 17:11 Hrs (IST)

Raipur: Accusing US of not being serious or honest about combating terrorism, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on October 3 said the Centre would root out the menace on its own might.

"The problem will not be solved by only giving slogans to launch global war against it. We have a clear stand that the US is neither honest nor serious about it," BJP national general secretary Rajnath Singh told at the BJP state headquarters at Raipur.

"The Centre is determined to root out terrorism from the country on its own. India is not desperate to get anyone's help on the issue although we would welcome if any country comes forward and extends its co-operation," Singh, who was in the city to attend a party programme, said.

Terrorism has assumed global proportions and all the nations should come forward and help each other to combat the menace, he said.

Replying to a query, Singh accused the Congress of internationalising the Kashmir issue saying, as the issue was taken to the United Nations by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru the nation is facing the problem today.

"When Bangladesh was formed India had an opportunity to solve the issue if the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had asked Pakistan to vacate Pak occupied Kashmir (PoK) in return of its 92,000 Prisoners of War (POW)," he said.

The senior BJP leader charged Pakistan with fomenting trouble and disturbing communal harmony in the country and criticised Pakistani President Gen Pervez Musharraf for raising Gujarat issue at the United Nations.
