Busan: Indian spikers registered their first victory in three matches when they
defeated lowly Macau in straight sets in a league tie in the 14th Asian Games on
Friday.
Despite the victory the Indian spikers are, however, out of the race for a place in
the semi-finals as Iran and Korea, both of whom defeated India in earlier matches,
are almost assured of a berth in the last four stage of the competition.
India on Friday put up a spirited display to emerge victorious 25-13, 25-16, 25-21
against Macau, which failed to trouble its opponents despite putting up a brave
front in the final set.
India will play its last league match against Qatar on October 8. Though India,
which played superbly before going down 2-3 to Iran on Thursday, failed to recreate
the performance on Friday, it managed to put pressure on the opponents throughout
the tie.
India won the first two sets easily with Amir Singh, leading the attack with
consistent booming shots, was well-supported by Subba Rao, Jobi and Tom Joseph.
But in the final set, the Indian spikers were not successful in blocks, which
allowed their opponents to stretch the set.
