Bangladesh denies violating Indian airspace
Saturday, October 5 2002 22:55 Hrs (IST)

Dhaka: Bangladesh on October 5 denied reports that an unidentified aircraft from its territory had flown over an Indian village in West Bengal, terming them as "false" and "baseless".

"After thorough verification from all relevant sources, the government would like to assert that such reports were totally false and baseless and that no aircraft emanating from Bangladesh intruded into Indian territory," acting foreign secretary Anwarul Alam Shahid told reporters.

He said the foreign office would call on the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka on October 6 to convey its concern on publication and broadcasting of such "false and baseless reports in the Indian media. Such reports do not contribute to strengthening friendly relations between the two countries".

He said Bangladesh's mission in India had been asked to request Indian media to exercise caution before publishing or broadcasting such "baseless" reports.
