New Delhi: Defence Minister George Fernandes accused Pakistan of making political
capital out of incidents of communal disharmony in India but denied his party was
being critical of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on the issue.
Fernandes, who is the Samata Party president, stated this at a press conference
while underlining the need for communal harmony. He said a resolution on the issue
would be adopted at the National Council Meeting of the party being held at Rajkot
later this month.
Noting that secularism formed the basis of the Constitution of India, he said that
whenever there have been deviations as regards communal harmony, "we have to bear
the brunt of our neighbour whose foundation was based on
religion".
Replying to questions, he denied that the resolution was being brought with focus on
controversial Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. "It is not focussed on any
individual or any incident," Fernandes said.
