Bangalore: An all party meeting held under the aegis of the Krishna Cauvery
Projection Committee (KCPC) and Karnataka Hitarakshna Samithi on October 5 decided
to urge the Karnataka government not to release water to Tamil Nadu in accordance
with the Supreme Court directive.
The meeting chaired by former Member of Parliament (MP) G M Madegowda, who is also
the chairman of the Mandya Farmers Rights Protection Committee, urged the state to
request the Prime Minister A B Vajpayee to convene the Cauvery River Authority
meeting by October 6 to resolve the crisis.
Briefing the press on the deliberations of the meeting Kannada Chaluvali leader
Vatal Nagaraj said, it decided to urge the state that it should not release water
under any circumstance and pressure from any quarter.
He said the meeting decided to resort to "Tamil Film bandh" agitation from October 7
forcing the cinema theatres not to screen Tamil films and observe October 12 as
a "Black Day".
The meeting appealed to farmers to continue the agitation on peaceful lines.
The meeting was attended by Farmers' Association leaders K S Puttannaiah, Prof M D
Nanjundaswamy, JD-U leaders, C Byregowda, P G R Sindhia, left party leaders,
Congress MLA, M S Atmananda, JD-S MLA, Cheluvarya Swamy, H D Chowdaiah (Ind MLA) and
others.
