Ottawa: Canadian Foreign Minister Bill Graham expressed his regret here over
Pakistan's recent missile test on October 5.
"Canada deeply regrets that Pakistan has once again chosen to test a ballistic
missile, particularly at a time when tensions with India remain high," Graham said
in a statement on October 4.
Referring to the decade-old dispute over Kashmir between the two South Asian
Nations, he added,“As was the case with Pakistan's missile tests in May, this
exercise only serves to aggravate regional tensions and to complicate serious
efforts being undertaken by the international community to find a peaceful solution
to this very worrisome situation."
Tensions have been high since Jammu and Kashmir went to the polls September 16. The
elections are expected to end on October 8.
"We again urge Pakistan to abide by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1,172
and to cease development of ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear
weapons," he added, although he did not mention India's corresponding missile
tests.
India had earlier on October 4 tested a medium range surface-to-air missile nine
hours after Pakistan tested its own nuclear-capable medium-range ballistic
missile.
