Ganga-Cauvery link project presented to Vajpayee
Sunday, October 6 2002 00:30 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: A presentation interlinking of major rivers line on the ambitious Ganga- Cauvery project, being touted as a panacea for all ills facing water starved India, was made to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on October 5.

The presentation was made by officials of the Union Water Resources Ministry, at which Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani was also present so also Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who has revived the proposal for the Ganga-Cauvery line project.

The idea for such a link was first mooted some 50 years ago by K L Rao, an expert in irrigation and a minister in Nehru's Cabinet.

The National Water Development Agency under the Water Resources Ministry has carried out a series of studies on linking of rivers during the last two decades.

Some experts are of the view that such a project would put an end to inter-state water disputes besides bringing in ecological balance and ground water recharge in the country.
