DMK to boycott all party meeting on October 7
Monday, October 7 2002 16:06 Hrs (IST)

Chennai: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) will boycott an all party meeting on October 7 to discuss the Cauvery water issue convened by Tamil Naidu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, protesting her "personal attacks" on the Opposition leaders but demanded that the meeting announces a bandh call on the issue.

DMK president M Karunanidhi told reporters after the party's action committee meeting that DMK's participation would only complicate the issue as the Chief Minister had not refrained herself from attacking the opposition leaders personally, the DMK leaders in particular.

"Boycott does not mean that we are showing disrespect to the leaders of the other parties as we believe in civilised politics," a resolution passed at the meeting said.

He said DMK would support any "good decision" taken at the meeting to safeguard the interests of farmers in the state. The meeting should issue a call for a statewide bandh, he said.

"If the all party meeting did not decide on the bandh, DMK in consultation with other parties, would give a bandh call", he declared.
