One succumbs to Hubli violence, curfew imposed
Tuesday, October 8 2002 20:52 Hrs (IST)

Hubli: One person was stabbed to death and another suffered serious head injuries on October 8 as violence that erupted over a group clash continued unabated forcing the authorities to bring the city under night curfew.

In a fresh bout of violence that broke out in old city area, unidentified miscreants stabbed to death a person and assaulted another, police said.

The injured who was shifted to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, was reported to be recovering, police said.

The miscreants also indulged in stone pelting damaging several vehicles and torched a three-wheeler, Hubli-Dharwad city police commissioner, K V Gagandeep told reporters.

As tension mounted, the police imposed dawn to dusk curfew in the city as a precautionary measure and arrested at least 38 persons in connection with the violence.

Trouble broke out on October 7 following rumours that a person belonging to a particular community committed nuisance in an auto rickshaw belonging to another community.

The police opened fire on October 7 to quell the rioting mob in which two persons received bullet injuries and the injured were undergoing treatment.

All shops and business establishments downed their shutters.

Additional police reinforcement have been deployed to maintain law and order.
