Women approach Human Rights body in Assam
Tuesday, October 8 2002 19:34 Hrs (IST)

Guwahati: Two young women activists of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have petitioned the Assam Human Rights Commission for being detained by the police on the charge of having acting in and production of pornographic films and a virginity test being conducted on them by a male doctor in custody.

The petitioners Rita Dutta, Bongaon Village Panchayat President, and college student Shikha Rani Bhattacharya in a petition before the Commission on October 7 asserted that they were detained at Belsore police station in Nalbari district on September 13 and subjected to "indecent and outrageous behaviour".

They alleged that the policemen took them to the police station for 'questioning' and after nightlong detention informed them the next morning that they were under arrest.

Dutta and Bhattacharya also alleged that they were subjected to a virginity test by a male doctor.

Though no reason or basis was assigned for their arrest, the petitioners stated that the police "vaguely mentioned" vernacular media reports that they were allegedly associated with pornographic films.

They claimed that they were victims of "a well concerted conspiracy" not only to defame them but to ruin their life and promising "political careers".

The commission's member Dr H N Kalita said that as per procedure the petition was registered and would be placed before the Rights body's bench.
