Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's call for a 12-hour statewide general strike on October 9 is a "pathetic admission of political impotence and utter failure of an elected leader to provide adequate water to farmers", Janata Party president, Dr Subramanian Swamy, said in Chennai on October 10.

"Her call for a bandh is essentially to run away from the responsibility of the office and represents a gross dereliction of duty," he said in a statement.

Swamy said the Supreme Court and several High Courts had held 'bandhs' as illegal and un-Constitutional because they interfered with the day-to-day activities of common people.

"Poor people on daily wages lose their subsistence, while the old, sick and pregnant women suffer because of lack of assured transportation," Swamy said.
