India questions UN judgment on 'security alert'
Tuesday, October 8 2002 13:07 Hrs (IST)

United Nations: India has questioned the judgment of senior United Nations (UN) officials in recently declaring a 'phase three emergency' or security alert covering its personnel in India.

"Family members of UN staffers in New York, vacationing in India at official expense, were forced to displace themselves from India, at further official expense, to hotels in Thailand for periods extending weeks," India's UN Ambassador V K Nambiar told the UN General Assembly.

Whatever the implications this might have for the expenses borne by the organisation, "for India this development provided a telling insight into the political judgement and evaluative capacities of the UN Secretariat at senior levels in the political and security divisions", he said.
