Tuesday, October 8 2002 15:25 Hrs (IST)

Busan: Already out of medal contention, India played its best game in the competition so far to beat Qatar in straight games in the volleyball event of the Asian Games on Tuesday.

With this victory, India ended its league engagements with two wins and two defeats from four matches and will now play Pakistan and Chinese Taipei for 5 to 8 positions.

India, who was placed in the Group ‘A’, had lost the first two matches against Korea and Iran respectively and defeated Macau in the third match.

In Tuesday's game, India mixed attack and defence to great effect to demolish a fighting Qatar 25-22, 25-17, 25-14.

Jobi Joseph, Tom Joseph and Subba Rao's relentless attack supported by effective blocks from M S Rao did not give their opposition any chance to win even a single game, though they came close to take the first one.

In the final two games, India served well to take the issue beyond Qatar.
