Canada urges India, Pak to resume peace talks
Wednesday, October 9 2002 10:45 Hrs (IST)

Ottawa: Canada called on India and Pakistan to "de-escalate and resume dialogue immediately".

The call was made on October 8 in the House of Commons by Secretary of State for Asia and the Pacific David Kilgour.

Asked specifically about Pakistan's test last week of a surface-to-air ballistic missile and India's testing of a conventional surface-to-air missile, Kilgour said, "After Pakistan's test last Friday, Canada expressed deep regret and urged a halt to nuclear development.

"Today, we reiterate that as tensions in the region remain high, these tests are counterproductive and serve only to undermine efforts by the international community to bring a lasting peace," said Kilgour.

"Canada urges both Pakistan and India to de-escalate and resume dialogue immediately."
