Chennai: The 12-hour "dawn-to-dusk" general strike, called by all political parties
in Tamil Nadu, including the main Opposition party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam
(DMK), began at 06:00 hours (IST) on October 9 morning, amidst tight security.
The general strike has been called by all political parties to condemn the
continuous refusal by Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu despite Supreme Court
and Cauvery River Authority (CRA) directives.
Public transport system was completely paralysed as the strike began, as buses,
taxis and autorickshaws were off the road the road and train services coming to a
standstill.
Several long distance incoming trains were regulated and stopped at major railway
stations in the state, Railway sources said.
Police sources said the strike was peaceful and no untoward incidents were reported
so far. However, flights were operated as normal at the Meenambakkam airport.
Security has been beefed up in vulnerable points throughout the state, police said.
