Srinagar: Constantly dismissive about the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, the
Hurriyat Conference on October 10 said the results were a "vote against the Central
government" and hoped that the parties emerging victorious would "live upto their
promises" made during electioneering.
Hurriyat chairman Abdul Ghani Bhat also maintained that the polls would not be of
great help unless the "basic issue" was addressed.
"What had to happen has happened. National Conference has lost and BJP (Bharatiya
Janata Party) has been wiped out," Bhat said in his reaction to the election
results.
"This is a vote against the government of India because these parties (who are
emerging victorious) to some extent have been speaking about aspirations of the
people of Kashmir, advocated talks between India and Pakistan and release of
separatists," he said.
On the Hurriyat's hopes about the new government, Bhat said his organisation wanted
it to "live upto their promises made during the electioneering and work towards
fulfilling
these. Otherwise, they will also meet the same fate as National Conference."
He, however, maintained that "till the basic issue is addressed, nothing will
happen."
"Elections after addressing the basic issue can be of help," he said.
