Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections have spelt doom for the Abdullah
family as two of its members lost badly from its traditional constituencies.
The first bad news trickled from the prestigious Ganderbal Assembly seat when Union
Minister Omar Abdullah, recently crowned president of the National Conference (NC),
lost to Qazi Mohammed Afzal of People's Democratic Party by over 2000 votes.
The Ganderbal Assembly seat was lost by NC only twice in 1967 and 1972. The defeat
came as a rude shock to the party, with its top leadership remaining incommunicado.
Other bad news of the day for the Abdullah's came with the defeat of Mustafa Kamal,
brother of Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, when he was made to bite dust by PDP
candidate Ghulam Hassan Mir by over 19,000 votes.
This was yet another safe seat for National Conference, which it had lost only in
1972 to Congress.
