Early trends spell doom for National Conference

Srinagar: The ruling National Conference was lagging in almost all the Assembly constituencies in Srinagar and Anantnag districts with Peoples' Democratic Party and Congress making inroads in several of the party's stronghold.

Chief Ministerial candidate and NC president Omar Abdullah was lagging behind his PDP rival Qazi Mohammed Afzal in Ganderbal Assembly constituency.

Congress was leading in Hiranagar, Poonch-Haveli, Kalakote, Reasi, Chenani, Ramban and Basholi constituencies, while BJP was leading in Gool-Arnas and Bani constituencies.

National Conference and BSP were ahead in Gulabgarh and Vijaypur constituencies, while JKNPP and independent were leading in Udhampur and Billawar constituencies.

While in Cadoora, Javed Mir of PDP was leading over his nearest NC rival Ali Mohammed Dar by over 2,300 votes, in Budgam PDP candidate Mohammed Kamal Malik was leading over NC candidate Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi by over 300 votes.

Independent candidate and National Conference rebel Aga Mehmood had polled 125 votes so far.

In Anantnag district, the trends available for six Assembly constituencies so far had shown congress leading in three seats while PDP in two and CPM in one.

In Kokernag Congress candidate Peerzada Mohammad Syed was leading over his National Conference rival Syed Abdul Rashid.

Gulzar Ahmad of Congress was also leading over his nearest rival of National Conference Abdul Majid Mir at Shangus.

CPM candidate Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami was ahead of his National Conference opponent Ghulam Nabi Dar in Kulgam while PDP candidates, Abdul Aziz Zargar of Noorabad constituency and Mohammad Sartaj Madani of Devsar, were leading over their NC rivals Sakina Itoo and Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad Shah respectively.

Devsar Congress candidate Ghulam Ahmad Mir was leading over National Conference candidate Syed Manzoor Ahmad.

Meanwhile, counting in Kupwara district began at 10:00 hours (IST).
