Salman's bail plea rejected, custody till Oct 14
Thursday, October 10 2002 18:58 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: A local court on October 10 rejected the bail plea of actor Salman Khan in a hit and run case and further remanded him to police custody till October 14.

Metropolitan Magistrate S Y Shisode allowed Salman home-food, water, change of clothes and toiletries.

The magistrate noted, "in my opinion, the matter has reached a crucial stage of investigation, considering the seriousness of the offence."

"In my considered view I feel that police custody may be extended till October 14 and release of accused on bail at this stage may frustrate the investigations," he said.

Prosecution prayed for 10 days' police custody of the accused to complete the investigation. They said a police team had gone to Kerala to trace the owner of the vehicle purportedly owned by Salman Khan.

"I have given anxious consideration to the submissions and counter-submissions of both the sides," Shisode said.

"I am not satisfied with the plea of prosecution for 10 days' police custody to interrogate the accused," he added.

"It is pertinent to mention here that Salman was arrested and released on bail on September 28 when his car rammed into a bakery, killing one person and injuring four others and was available to police for interrogation," the Magistrate said.

Salman was again arrested 10 days later. Therefore, the prayer of application for 10 days' police custody is not justified, he said.

Later Salman himself pleaded with the magistrate not to place him in police custody and assured that he will cooperate with the police in further investigation.

The actor also said if the owner of the vehicle was not traceable in Kerala, he would be very much available to the police. Salman's lawyer Abad Ponda submitted a 40-page document to the court regarding the purchase of the car.
