New Delhi: Stepping up its attack on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Vishwa Hindu
Parishad (VHP) on October 11 asked the ruling party and Prime Minister Atal Behari
Vajpayee to change their attitude towards "Hindu issues" including the Ram temple
imbroglio or face electoral rout on the lines of Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir.
In a letter to party president Venkaiah Naidu, VHP chief Ashok Singhal said
Vajpayee's credibility has been eroded due to his failure to resolve the Ayodhya
issue.
"It (credibility) can be improved if his attitude changes. Only a Cabinet decision
is required to return the acquired land back to the Ram Janambhoomi Nyas," Singhal
told reporters.
Despite "agreeing on everything", they (government) waited for the one-year deadline
given by the Hindu religious leaders to end before requesting the court to expedite
the hearing of the vexed issue on a day-to-day basis, he said.
Singhal said while the construction of the Ram temple, abrogation of Article 370 and
Uniform Civil Code were not in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) agenda, the
VHP was "very upset" over the government ignoring other issues of Hindu concerns
such as checking the flow of river Ganges through construction of the Tehri Dam and
cow protection.
Asked about VHP president Vishnu Hari Dalmia's recent statement that the ties with
BJP were nearing "breaking point", Singhal said, "Our message to BJP is reform
yourself. It can change our attitude. They are alienating the Hindus as is evident
from the results of the Delhi civic polls and the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly
elections. If they don't change, the Hindu society will react in its own silent
way."
