Mumbai: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal on October 12 described
situation in Solapur, where five people were killed and 66 injured in incidents of
riots and police firing on October 11, as peaceful and under control.
"The situation in Solapur is under control now," Bhujbal told in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, curfew clamped in the city on October 11 following incidents of arson and
rioting, has been extended till 6 pm (IST) on October 12, spokesman of state police
headquarters told in Mumbai.
Five persons, three in police firing and remaining in violent incidents, were killed
and 66 injured as bandh called by Muslim organisations to protest the US Baptist
Minister Jerry Falwel's reported statement against Prophet Mohammad, turned violent.
Referring to media reports about Falwel's statement on a television programme,
Bhujbal, who also holds Home portfolio said, "media should have thought before
carrying such reports. Media should understand that such reports can lead to ill-
feeling among different communities and evoke reactions in India", he added.
Bhujbal will be visiting Solapur on October 12 to take stock of the situation.
State water supplies Minister R R Patil, who is also the guardian Minister of
Solapur district, is camping there since October 11 to oversee the situation.
