Mumbai: One person was killed in police firing and another stabbed to death on
October 12, taking the death toll to seven, as arson and rioting continued for the
second consecutive day in textile town of Solapur in Maharashtra despite imposition
of curfew.
"Police opened fire to quell the rioting mob killing one person and injuring two
others," Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Manikrao Thakre said.
He said another person was stabbed to death and miscreants continued to torch shops
and business establishments despite curfew being in force in the city.
Nearly 120 persons have been injured in the two days' violence, the minister said
adding that police had made 258 arrests so far.
Violence in the city had claimed five lives on October 11, three in police firing
and two in stabbing, and left many injured.
Curfew has been extended till October 13 morning and a decision on its continuance
would be taken after reviewing the situation, the minister said.
Trouble had broken out in the textile city on October 11 after a bandh called by
local outfit "Muslim Vikas Parishad", headed by a journalist M D Shaikh to protest
the US Baptist Minister Jerry Falwel's reported statement against prophet Mohammed,
turned violent.
