Srinagar: Senior People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Ghulam Hassan Mir on October
15 held discussions with eight legislators of the newly formed People's Democratic
Forum (PDF) in a bid to break the deadlock between his party and Congress over the
issue of Chief Ministership in Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting between Mir and the eight MLAs six independents and two of CPM, assumed
significance after PDP president Mufti Mohammed Sayeed made it clear that his party
would not relent on the issue of Chief Ministership.
Emerging after an hour-long meeting with the group, Mir told reporters that some
flexibility would be shown by the PDP and some was expected from Congress as well.
"Kuch woh chale, kuch hum chale aur carvan ban hi jayega (some steps from their
side, some from our side will definitely help)", Mir, who defeated Farooq Abdullah's
brother Mustafa Kamal from Gulmarg Assembly seat, said.
While expressing optimism that something would come up by October 16 evening, he
said PDP, Congress and smaller groups and independents have to ensure that the
mandate of the people is not frustrated.
Asked if the deadlock would continue and the state would go into President's Rule,
Mir said, "Please, I am here and I hope that something will happen later. Let us be
optimistic."
To a question about the stand taken by Mufti over the issue of Chief Ministership,
he said if the mandate of the people has to be respected, then some flexibility has
to be shown by everyone.
CPM leader Mohammed Yusuf Tarigami, who was elected the leader of the PDF, said, "we
are interested in supporting a new government headed by Congress and PDP".
