JK: No Constitutional crisis, if impasse continues
Tuesday, October 15 2002 19:46 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir may not face any Constitutional crisis if the stalemate in formation of the new government continues beyond October 17 even as opinion was divided on whether the government has to be formed by that date.

After the Constitution of the ninth state Assembly following the elections, a state government has to be in place at the end of the six-year tenure of last Assembly on October 17, official sources said in Srinagar.

October 17 is the Constitutional deadline by when Governor G C Saxena have to decide on the claims presented by various political parties regarding formation of the next government, the sources said.

However, sources close to Raj Bhawan said there was no such time frame for the new legislature to take oath, as the new Assembly has already been constituted.

The state government formally notified the names of all members elected to the 87-member Assembly on October 13 along with their party affiliations.

Election Commission sources also discounted fears of any Constitutional crisis if a government is not in place by October 17.
