J&K govt: Azad seeks more time from Governor
Wednesday, October 16 2002 12:49 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Ghulam Nabi Azad on October 16 met Governor G C Saxena and sought more time to work out modalities for forming a possible coalition government in the state.

Azad called on the Governor after a 40-minute meeting with People's Democratic Alliance (PDP) chief Mufti Mohammad Sayeed at the latter's residence to iron out continuing differences over the issue of Chief Ministership.

After his meeting with the Governor, Azad said that he had sought time from him with regard to formation of a coalition government in the state.

He said he had told the Governor during his meeting on October 14 that he would apprise him by October 16 whether he would be able to form a coalition government with the help of PDP and other independent MLAs or not.

After his meeting with Sayeed, Azad said, "We are still working towards an amicable solution to the political impasse. I am going to inform the Governor that we have not closed the chapter of PDP-Congress coalition and we need little more time to work out the modalities. I am hopeful till the last minute."

Congress had claimed that it had the support of candidates from Panthers Party, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Jammu State Morcha (JSM) and other independents both from Jammu and Kashmir.
