29 accused granted bail in post-Godhra carnage
Wednesday, October 16 2002 21:03 Hrs (IST)

Ahmedabad: Gujarat High Court on October 16 granted bail to 29 persons, accused in murder of six minority community members in Ambasana village during the post-Godhra clashes but asked them to appear before police every week.

Justice Akshay H Mehta granted bail to 29 of the 33 accused in the case, wherein the six were "murdered" on April 3 night, according to the counsel for the accused.

The accused, all from majority community, were arrested on April 6 and seven and the sessions court had earlier rejected their bail plea.

Appearing before justice Mehta's court, the counsel for the accused said, "The police had bungled up the case and the prosecution had no strong evidence to support their stand."

Granting bail of Rs 10,000 each to 29 of them, justice Mehta ordered that the accused "will not be allowed to enter Detroj taluka except for marking their presence every week at Detroj police station".
