Forensic Science Lab submits report on Godhra
Wednesday, October 16 2002 16:52 Hrs (IST)

Ahmedabad: Forensic Science Laboratory official on October 16 told the two-member judicial commission, probing the Godhra carnage, that it was "not possible" to pour combustible liquid into the ill-fated compartment of Sabarmati Express from outside, which had left 58 dead.

Appearing before Justice G T Nanawati and Justice K G Shah, assistant director of the laboratory, M S Dahia said by "re-enacting the scene of February 27 we found that it was not possible to pour the liquid from outside as the compartment was seven feet above the ground level".

The submissions were made amidst repeated grilling of Dahia by Justice Nanavati and counsels for VHP and Central Relief Committee for Minorities.

Submitting written copies of the reports and photographs, Dahia said the liquid was possibly poured into the compartment by someone standing near seat number 72.

Responding to questions from Justice Nanavati, he said no evidence of any acid was found and a minimum 60 litres of combustible liquid was used before torching S-6 compartment of Sabarmati Express.

Dahia said that his team had only probed the physical probability of the incident. The chemical probe was being conducted by a separate team.

Western Railway DSP, Ashok Kumar Moniya also appeared before the commission on October 16.
